I just wanted to tell some funny stories that have happened to me this summer. To start I brought one pair of work boots with me that I've had for years. Great boots and I knew my feet would be safe wearing them. Well the first week here, they broke. so I was panicked and was looking for some tape to just wrap them up. Like any good American I know, duct tape fixes anything. Well its crazy expensive in Jamaica so I couldn't find duct tape anywhere! The only thing I could find was white electrical tape, so it had to work. After a week of the electrical tape holding my shoe together I stumbled upon some bright yellow duct tape when visiting the Knockpatrick School for the Deaf. So since early June I've been wearing one yellow boot and one brown boot. Another thing that happened to me was that when packing to come down here was that I gave myself a good 4 hours the night before to pack before I had to go to the airport. Because of that I forgot to pack work shirts. So the firs...

Playing catch up

Hello everyone, Im so sorry its been a while since I've last posted. Things are just crazy down here! I leave my room at 6:45am every morning and usually don't get back until 10 or 11pm at best. Its been a weird past 4 days in that it has rained everyday, which usually I would be excited about because it cools everything down and fills up the cisterns (collects rain water so we can shower and use the toilet), but on flip side of that we don't have a dryer because electricity is 4 times as much as it is in the States, so my clothes have been hanging in the rain for 4 days now. Work has been going good, were building new houses so the deaf families can move out of the apartments and into their own place. The last team that was here was a bigger group of 29ish people from Illinois, Missouri, and Michigan and most of them were my age so it was a lot of fun. We played so many games, card tricks, and just hung out and talked. It was very sad to see them go, but its apart of the j...

1 week in the village

So today is June 7th, I've been in the Jamaica Deaf Village now for just over a week. I'm sorry I am just now posting this blog but I've had many many problems connecting to wifi and my laptop breaking, so its been difficult to be able to have contact with everyone back home. On a side note, I'm not the best with grammar, so I'm going to intentionally put errors in this blog so you can't tell the difference between what I did on purpose and my mistakes :).         The hardest part about this whole thing was getting through customs and immigration at the Jamaican airport! The immigration agent did not understand why I was staying here for 10 weeks. She asked me where my return boarding pass was for going back to America. I told her I didn't have the boarding pass yet, so she made me give her my phone and she looked through my emails till she found one from Delta saying I was going back to the states. Then she asked how much cash I brought ...

Before I leave, 5/29/17

Its been official for some time now, but I wanted to let everyone know that an incredible opportunity has presented itself for me to go to Jamaica and live in the Jamaica Deaf Village. During college, I was blessed to go on two mission trips to Jamaica during my spring break and loved every minute of my experiences. Following my last mission trip, I stayed in contact with the people I met down there and found out about this opportunity to come and be a s hort-term missionary. I have jumped at the chance to be able to work with the deaf and I am so excited to have this once in a lifetime experience. To prepare myself, I have been taking two different sign language classes to improve my ability to communicate with the locals. I am also interning at JBS Mental Health Authority in their Deaf Services department until I depart May 30th.  To follow my journey, here is my blog. I'll be updating it frequently and posting pictures. Thanks for all the love and support!
